5.BUS EXCURSION «MUKACHEVO - «Castle «PALANOK»
Departure from hotel «Grand»
Duration of excursion 6 hours
Castle«Palanok»
Excursion to the rest complex "Myslivets (Hunter)"
The castle “Palanok”, which is threateningly situating on the hill, which height is more than 70 metres, is beauty and pride of carpathians city Mukachevo. It’s not hard to realize, what kind of glory had this castle many years ago. It walls remember many battles, sieges and wars
It is not exactly known when castle was built, but most historians think, that already in IX-X there were some defensive installations. It defended west borders of Kiev Russia against many nomads. The castle firstly reminded in written instruments in 1393, when Hungarian king Sihizmund I presented carpathians city Mukachevo with it castle to Russia prince Fedor Koryatovich. In that time the castle had only one square tower, which called Old Tower. Prince F. Koryatovich fundamentally rebuilt the castle. The old Tower was encircled with very deep ditch and stone wall, which height was nearly 10 metres. There were also built four high towers on the corners, which were nine metres in diameter and 2,5 metres thick. Three towers saved very well and you can see it now. Under the Old Tower prince F. Koryatovich told to dig a shaft, which had to supply citizens with fresh water in case of siege. Because of hard carpathians ground it had been digging during many years. But at last it reached 85 metres deep and water went on. There are many legends about this shaft and most of it connecting with devil
The time went on. There were many owners, most of them were Hungarian nobles. The castle changed also. It was encircled with wood palisade, which called palanok. That’s why the whole castle some times later called Palanok.
The important page in the history of the castle is XVI century. In 1526 the Hungarian army came to grief near Rohach. And the result of it was the beginning the struggle between Austria and Transylvania for Hungary. The main reason of this struggle was Palanok. In the middle of the XVI century the castle was practically completely destroyed. It made Austrian commander Sh. Forhach. But it was rebuilt by king Maksimilian II. He understood it military potential and strategic reliability too well.
In November 1685 began seven-month siege of the castle by Austria army. Attacks were were powerful, but had no success. All Europe was surprised. But in 1687 the new siege began again, but it hadn’t success too. Austrian generals understood all lack of prospects and decided to conquer with help of war ruse.
The management of castle defense was in hands of Olena Zrini, the wife of Imre Tekeli, who was Hungarian political figure. But at the time of siege he was in Turkish captivity. Austrian generals faked a letter, in which Imre Tekeli ordered Olena Zrini to surrender at discretion. Olena Zrini believed this letter and capitulated
In XVII century the castle rebuilt again. Long walls didn’t met the requirements and that’s why it were shortened. Square towers were changed by round. The outside defense zone changed too.
In 1703 the castle was the center of main political incidents - the national liberation war of Hungarian nation. After hard siege rebellions grasped the castle. From this time it became the bulwark and center of all war operations. The leader of rebellion was Franc II Rakoci. And again the castle rebuilt to war standards of XVIII century. There were built star-shape system of redoubts and dug a deep ditch, which was filled by water.
But in 1711 the castle was conquered by Hungarian army. It was the end of glory of Palanok. It lost it past military potential. In 1789 it was transformed in political prison. In 1848 the bourgeois revolution took place in Hungary. All prisoners were freed. In 1922-1926 it was transformed in casern, and in 1960 – in museum Nowadays, the castle Palanok is one of the most unique masterpiece of architecture and history. It experienced many censures, tens of sieges, thousands of battles and tens thousands of deaths. And it especially draws tourists, hikers, travelers and even adventurers in present time. In it walls you can feel it past glory, image exciting pictures of battles and of all history. And there many questions, which have not answers yet …
After an excursion on the Mukachivskij castle, we, displacing after the central voyage a bit in a side, appear in an extraordinarily interesting rest complex " Myslivets (Hunter)"". It is here possible to see the real habitants of Carpathians – wild wild boars - and even to feed them.

The Uzhgorod castle was property of Hungarian king, but in 1322 king Karl Robert presented it to baron Drugert. The castle was property of the family of this baron to 1691. During this time was built new stone fortification.
After disintegration of Hungary in 1526, the Uzhgorod castle like others castles of Zakarpat’ya, placed in the zone of political interests of Habsburgs and Transylvania principality.
In the end of the XVI century the castle was absolutely reconstruction, in cause of what it began look like modern one. There was dug a big ditch, which round up the castle from three sides. From the fourth one, it was defending by a great rock, which was so steep, that none of many enemies not even determine to attack castle from this side. Here wasn’t any wall, it was changed by many bastions. In the castle, by the project of Italian engineers, were carrying out works for strengthening defensive capacity of the castle. There were built much more strong and higher walls and new massive bastions on the corners. On this towers were placed artillery.
In 1684 the last representative of family of baron Drugert was killed, after what the castle belonged to the husband of Christina Druget – count Micklosh Berneche, which completed the construction.
The great rebellion against Austrians took place in 1707. The leader of rebellion was Franc II Rakoci. This rebellion some times later began the national liberation war of Hungarian nation, but the local rebellion in Uzhgorod was strangled.
The beginning of XVIII century became the end of glory time of Uzhgorod castle. In spring 1711, after short assault, it was occupied by Austrians army. After national liberation war (1703-1711) the castle didn’t play important rule. In 1728 it was almost absolutely destroyed by fire, after which the third floor wasn’t rebuilt. In 1735 the castle became the property of baron Ference D’layi. In 1775 queen Maria-Teresa presented it to Greco- Catholic episcopacy. In fact the castle was transformed in theological seminary. In December 1778, the Uzhgorod castle like others medieval castles was completely and fundamental change in theological seminary. It lost it past military potential. From 1946 on the territory of the castle situated Zakarpat’skiy regional geography museum. There are many interesting things, most of all closely concerned with history of the castle. There is also located one of the most ancient collection of bronze things, which very famous not only in Ukraine.
The castle saved very well and it can be called one of the masterpiece of medieval Romanesque. But there are also many indications of pointed style. There are more than 40 room in the palace There are many legends, which tell us about mysterious history of the castle. One of it tell a history about Polish gentleman, which decided to conquer the castle. In that times the castle was the property of family of baron Drugert. The governor of province decided to make a reconnaissance firstly. He redressed in another closes and arrived to the castle. There he met the daughter of the baron, who immediately falls in love with him. She told him all secrets of the castle. But baron knew about it and told to immuring his daughter in the wall alive. The order was executed. From that time, as the legend tell, in the full moon the spirit of the daughter walks on the walls looking for her darling.
Today, Uzhgorod castle – one the most amazing castles of Carpathian Mountains. The history of it counting more than one thousand years. The Legend about the name of the city
"… Long ago deuces used to carry mountains from one place to another. So one of them took up the mountain, on which the remains of the Hust castle stand now,and wanted to carry it to another place. As the mountain was too heavy, soon the devil decided to take a rest and put the mountain down. In the meantime another deuce was passing by, and the mountain, being put down, has accidentally squished his tail. So he started shouting : "Oh, oh, my tail, my tail!" (in old-Ukrainian the word “tail” sounded like “huist”). The other deuces heard that and ran up to help him get his tail away from the mountain. The poor deuce got very happy after getting his tail free and went away. The other one, who carried the mountain, picked it up and brought to the place, where it stands till nowadays. Since then the name of the place remained “Hust”.

This fabulous valley is situated in 5 km from the city. At the beginning of May the valley dresses up in lace linen, making an impression of being covered with ice-isles. Beregovo city
The city of Beregovo is situated on the banks of a small river of Verke. At the foot of mountains which slopes are planted with vineyards, it is known with its old traditions of grapes cultivation and wine manufacturing.
Well-known reformat writer Papai Pariz Ferenc (1649-1716) in his book “Dictionarium latino-hungarium” claims, that there had been a Roman settlement before arrival of Hungarians, called Perigium. However there had been no success in scientific confirmation of such assumption.
It is authentically known that after death of brother Bejla of Hungarian king Endre I, his landed properties by the right of succession became a property of his sons- Heiza, Laszlo and Lampert. This district had passed in possession of Lampert. In folklore it is spoken that a founder of a settlement on the banks of Verke which had been later called after him “Villa Lamperti “, that means –The House of Lampert, was exactly him.
During many centuries the Hungarian kings had been the owners of the settlement.
In 1141 after numerous invadings of Polovci, king Geiza II had moved the Saxons into city, since that the city had been called Szasz, Lampertszasz, Lumprehtszasz, Lamperthaz.
A widely known legend says that the city had been founded much earlier. Due to this a famous researcher-ethnographer Tivadar Legocki wrote “As to a legend according to which a young shepherd Szasz on the place of present roman-catholic church, in a hole dug by the hoofs of fighting bulls, had found a treasure and had constructed on that place church, and had built a city around it, which had been called later as Beregszasz, has no historical confirmation.”
Since 1504 the city in documents mentioned as Beregszasz.
Since 1946, the official name of the city is Beregovo. It is the only city of Transkarpathia where the prevailing majority of population are Hungarians.
Beregovo is the city of regional submission, is the center of Beregovskij area, it is located on the distance of 72 kms. from the state center Uzhgorod. Across the city flows a small channel of Verke, connecting the river Borzhava with Latorica.
Until 1944 the city with some breaks had been the heart of Beregovskaja Zhupa.
As it’s been already marked, the founder of Beregovo had been duke Lampert, the king brother’s son Endre I Bejla. Later adjoining landed properties became the properties of Arpad dynasty kings and their sons. In 1247 king Bejla IV had given to the city status of the royal city. Its prosperity had coincided with the period of reign of the king Liudvig the Great and the queen Erzhebet. Later the adjoining lands had come in possession of Transilvania Prince Gabor Betlen, who had the palace built in the city. Beregovo had an important role in the emancipating anti-gabsburg war of Prince Ferenc Rakoci. The 22nd of May of 1703, on the central square of Beregovo Tomas Esze had developed a banner of revolt. Ference Rakoci in the city had given out in December 20 1705, the appeal to people to revolt.
The city had taken an active part in the emancipating war of 1848-1849. After the Sen-Zhermen peace treaty, it became a part of Czechoslovak republic.
In June 1945 Transkarpathia became a part of Ukraine.
In Beregovo there are one Russian, two Ukrainian and three Hungarian high schools, one Ukrainian and one Hungarian grammar schools, one professional and one medical schools. The Hungarian pedagogical institute had recently been open. The D. Iljes professional Hungarian national theater is also available, an amateur folk theater at the regional center of culture and rest.
